Epiduo forte Information

What is Epiduo forte?

Epiduo Forte is a prescription medication manufactured by Galderma UK Ltd used to treat acne. It is a topical gel that combines two active ingredients: adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. Both of these ingredients work together to help manage acne by addressing different aspects of its development.

To find out more about acne and see all the available treatments, visit our acne page.

What causes acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. Several factors contribute to the development of acne, and these can vary from person to person.

How does Epiduo forte gel work?

Epiduo forte has 2 active ingredients:

Adapalene: Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid, a type of compound derived from vitamin A. It works by promoting cell turnover and preventing the formation of comedones (clogged pores). Adapalene also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce redness and swelling associated with acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is an antimicrobial agent that kills the bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) associated with acne. Additionally, it helps to unclog pores by removing excess oils and promoting exfoliation of dead skin cells.

Which is better Epiduo or Epiduo forte

Epiduo forte contains a higher concentration of adapalene at 0.3% and the same concentration of benzoyl peroxide at 2.5%. The increased concentration of adapalene in Epiduo Forte may provide a more potent effect in treating acne, but it may also be associated with a higher risk of side effects such as irritation and dryness.

In general, Epiduo Forte is often prescribed for more severe cases of acne, while Epiduo may be used for milder cases. It's important to use these medications as directed by a healthcare professional, as they can cause skin irritation and dryness, and adherence to the recommended regimen is crucial for optimal results. Additionally, sunscreen use is often recommended while using these products, as they can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment recommendations based on your specific skin condition.

Epiduo gel reviews

Reviews from users of Epiduo gel have noted the high success rate of the treatment but explained that you will need to persist (some reviewers explaining that it took 4 months to see a transformative effect) with the treatment to see positive results.

These reviews detail that some users experience an initial purge period, during which you may find that your acne symptoms get worse before settling down. You may see some redness and irritation in the first few weeks of treatment.

Epiduo alternatives

Epiduo forte gel is a topical retinoid and it works by normalising hyper keratinisation, which removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin and therefore unblocks your pores. The other topical treatments available for your acne are:

  • Topical antibiotics – this kills the bacteria on your skin that is responsible for infecting your clogged hair follicles. These include Zineryt and Dalacin T.
  • Other topical treatments - these work in a similar way to Epiduo by reducing the build-up of dead skin cells, helping to keep your pores clear and therefore stopping blackheads and whiteheads. These include Acnecide and Differin. They are suitable for mild to moderate acne and can be combined with antibiotics for a greater effect.
  • Azelaic acid (Skinoren) – this removes your dead skin cells and kills Propionibacterium acnes
  • Antibiotic tablets – normally used in combination with topical non-antibiotic treatments, also kills P.acnes and reduces the inflammation caused by acne. These are suitable for moderate to severe acne and include Tetralysal and Oxytetracycline. Oral antibiotics work well with Epiduo to reduce severe acne.

Are there any natural treatments for acne?

Alongside the available prescription treatments for acne, there are a number of natural remedies that you can use to tackle your acne. You should also establish good skincare routines and make sure that you are:

  • Cleansing your skin
  • Exfoliating your skin
  • Moisturising your skin
  • Avoiding excessive sun exposure

How to use Epiduo forte

Apply a thin layer of Epiduo forte gel to the affected area once daily in the evening. You should apply gel to the whole affected area, not just the spots themselves. Use continuously for up to 3 months.

  • You should wash your face using warm water and a mild cleanser or soap before use.
  • Pat it dry, rubbing can irritate the skin and cause redness.
  • If dry skin or irritation occurs at the start of treatment, try applying Epiduo every other day and slowly work up to daily applications.

Epiduo forte ingredients

Epiduo gel contains the active ingredients: adapalene 0.3% w/w and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% w/w.

It also contains the inactive ingredients:
docusate sodium, disodium edetate, glycerin, poloxamer, propylene glycerol (E1520), simulgel 600 PHA (copolymer of acrylamide and sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate, isohexadecane, polysorbate 80, sorbitan oleate) & purified water.

Epiduo forte side effects

Epiduo Forte, like any medication, can cause side effects. It's important to use this medication under the supervision and guidance of a healthcare professional. Common side effects of Epiduo Forte may include:
  1. Skin Irritation: The most common side effect is skin irritation, which may manifest as redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. This irritation is often temporary and may improve as your skin gets used to the medication.
  2. Sun Sensitivity: Adapalene, one of the active ingredients in Epiduo Forte, can increase sensitivity to sunlight. It is important to use sunscreen and limit sun exposure during treatment to minimize the risk of sunburn.
  3. Contact Dermatitis: Some individuals may develop contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in Epiduo Forte. If you experience itching, swelling, or rash, contact your healthcare provider.
  4. Discolouration of Fabrics: Benzoyl peroxide, another active ingredient, may bleach hair or fabrics, so it's advisable to avoid contact with colored clothing, towels, and hair.
  5. Dry Skin: The medication may cause dryness of the skin, and it's important to use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to help alleviate this symptom.

If you experience any unexpected or bothersome side effects while using Epiduo Forte, contact your healthcare provider promptly. They can provide guidance on managing side effects or adjust your treatment plan if necessary. It's also crucial to follow the prescribed application instructions and use the medication as directed to optimize its effectiveness and minimize potential side effects.
