Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream Information

  • What is Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream?

Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream is a topical form of estrogen used primarily to treat symptoms of vaginal atrophy, a condition often associated with menopause. Here’s a bit more about it:

The cream helps relieve symptoms such as vaginal dryness, itching, burning, and discomfort that result from decreased estrogen levels in the vaginal tissues. It can also help with urinary symptoms linked to vaginal atrophy.

Estriol is a type of estrogen, and the 0.01% concentration means that each gram of the cream contains 0.01 grams of estriol. This is a relatively low dose compared to other estrogen therapies.

What is Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream used for?

Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream is used to treat vaginal dryness or vaginal atrophy in menopausal women caused by a drop in levels of oestrogen produced by the ovaries. Or to promote wound healing following vaginal surgery.

    Symptoms of vaginal dryness:

    • Soreness or itchiness in and around your vagina
    • Pain, bleeding or discomfort during sex
    • Needing to urinate more frequently
    • Recurring urinary tract infections (UTI)

Vaginal dryness is a common complaint of women experiencing the menopause, however, some women will have a more severe experience than others, which can interfere with daily living.

If you are unsure if you are experiencing vaginal dryness or you are unsure of the cause you should speak to a doctor for advice.

How does Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream work?

In the same way as other HRT, EstriolCream relieves unpleasant menopausal symptoms by restoring the levels of oestrogen that before the menopause would have been produced by the ovaries.

However, because EstriolCream is inserted directly into the vagina instead of being taken orally or absorbed through the skin it allows the oestrogen to be absorbed exactly where it is needed. Using topical HRT provides women with fast-acting relief but with less of the risks of experiencing unwanted side effects.

How long does Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream take to work?

When women are initially prescribed Estriol Cream for vaginal dryness, most commonly they will apply the treatment once a day for 2 - 3 weeks. Most women will see noticeable improvements to their condition within this time.

If you do not feel Estriol Cream has offered you adequate relief by 4 weeks you should speak to a doctor for further advice.

    Estriol Cream alternatives

Estriol Cream is a topical or local HRT that is inserted directly into the vagina, as a cream to decrease vaginal dryness caused by the menopause. Vagifem is another form of topical oestrogen-only HRT used to combat vaginal dryness, which is available as either tablets or pessaries that are inserted into the vagina.

At The Independent Pharmacy, we also offer a range of over-the-counter, non-hormonal vaginal lubricants and moisturisers or other forms of HRT on prescription, including those taken orally and patches. For more information about available treatments, take a look at our Advice for Menopause (HRT) page.

If you are suffering from symptoms of the menopause you must discuss your treatment options with a doctor. They will be able to advise you on what is the best form of HRT to suit you.

    How to apply Estriol Cream

The recommended time to use Estriol Cream is just before you go to bed.

    1. Remove the cap from the tube. Use the top of the cap to pierce the metal seal on the tube
    2. One end of the applicator has a plunger. Screw the other end of the applicator onto the tube
    3. Squeeze the tube so that the applicator barrel is completely filled with cream. This will push the plunger out
    4. Unscrew the filled applicator and replace the cap on the tube
    5. Lie down with your knees bent and spread apart
    6. Gently insert the open end of the applicator well into your vagina
    7. Push the plunger firmly but gently. Empty the cream into your vagina by pushing the plunger as far as it will go
    8. Keep the plunger firmly pressed down. Grip the applicator by the barrel and remove the empty applicator
    9. Wash your hands afterwards
    10. Use a sanitary towel to stop your clothes getting stained
