• What does Tetralysal contain?

  Lymecycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that helps to kill the bacteria that overgrow on the skin and contribute to acne.

• How do I take Tetralysal/Lymecycline?

  In adults and children 18 years and over, the dose of Tetralysal is one capsule daily, usually in the morning. You should not take more than one Tetralysal capsule in a 24-hour period.

• Why can I only buy three months of Tetralysal online at one time?

  Tetralysal is a prescription-only antibiotic. For that reason, to ensure the safety of our patients and the legal operating of our pharmacy, we only supply a maximum of 3 months treatment at one time. Tetralysal treatment is normally judged for effectiveness after 3 months. This means that if you do not find Tetralysal as effective as you would like, you are not stuck with an excess of medication. • How long does it take for Tetralysal (Lymecycline) to work?

  Tetralysal is normally taken for a minimum of 8 weeks to treat acne. After 8 weeks you should be able to tell if it has helped to improve your skin and then make a decision as to whether they should be continued or not. Short courses of Tetralysal for fewer than 8 weeks are usually less effective and is unlikely to give you an accurate picture of whether it will be an effective treatment to clear up your acne.

• How does Tetralysal/Lymecycline work?

  Lymecycline is an antibiotic. Acne is often caused by the bacteria that naturally live on your skin overgrowing and creating by-products that build up and block pores over time turn into spots and breakouts that can spread to other parts of the body if not treated correctly. Lymecycline helps to keep the levels of bacteria living on your skin under control which helps to unclog your pores and clear up the symptoms of acne.

• Can I use other Acne treatments with Tetralysal/Lymecycline?

  You can combine Tetralysal with creams such as containing benzoyl peroxide (Epiduo, Quinoderm & Panoxyl) or azelaic acid (Skinoren). Tetralysal should not be taken with any other products containing antibiotics such as erythromycin, tetracycline or minocycline. Generally, Tetralysal is not used with any other acne antibiotic treatment as they have a similar method of action and usually do not provide any additional benefit. Simultaneous use of multiple acne antibiotics may also increase the risk of experiencing side effects.

• How severe should my Acne be to take Tetralysal?

  Tetralysal should be used to treat moderate to severe acne on the face, neck, shoulders or back. Because it is ingested orally, Tetralysal can be used to treat larger areas like the back or neck, and can be more convenient than applying topical treatments. Lymecycline is a good treatment to try if regular cleansing of the affected areas does not alleviate symptoms, particularly if the acne is causing self-esteem issues or depression.

  Moderate acne is defined by NHS Choices as where there are multiple papules and pustules (red spots and whiteheads) that are mostly confined to the face. If this describes your acne, or it is more severe, Lymecycline may be a suitable treatment for your acne.

• What causes skin to break out?

  Acne, known as acne vulgaris, is a skin condition involving the oil glands at the base of the follicles. It commonly occurs during puberty when the oil glands reach peak activity, but can continue into adult life. Hormonal fluctuations throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle are often known to cause acne. Tetralysal (lymecycline) can be an effective method to combat these breakouts.

• Does Tetralysal affect the Contraceptive Pill?

  Tetralysal may affect the contraceptive pill making it less effective. You may wish to consider using additional methods of contraception, such as condoms, whilst taking Tetralysal.

• Can you drink alcohol while taking Tetralysal?

  Tetralysal capsules should be taken once daily in the morning. They are unlikely to be affected by alcohol consumed later in the day.

• Does this treatment cause hair loss?

  There are no proven links between Tetralysal 300 and hair loss. However, if you experience this symptom, you should seek medical advice.

• Does Lymecycline kill good bacteria?

  Tetralysal capsules should be used as a short-term treatment for acne. Repeated use of any antibiotic can build resistance, reducing the treatment’s effectiveness. Long-term use of lymecycline can upset the body’s natural bacterial cultures. If your spots persist after completing your Tetralysal treatment, you should seek medical advice and consider trying alternative methods.

• What if Tetralysal doesn't work?

  If lymecycline treatment does not cure your acne, there are many other options for you to try. You may wish to try a different antibiotic treatment such as Dalacin T or Zineryt, or alternatively a different method with topical treatments such as Differin or Skinoren. Different people find that their acne responds to different treatment depending on their skin type, what causes their acne and any other skin conditions they may also suffer with. It is therefore important to try a range of treatments and give them time to have an effect to allow you to find a suitable and effective treatment for your acne.

• Should I stop taking Lymecycline as soon as my Acne clears up?

  If you find treatment with Tetralysal successful and your acne improves, you should continue taking Tetralysal for a few months before stopping your treatment. This will ensure that any remaining excess bacteria on your skin are removed and give you the best chance of keeping your skin clear of spots by cleansing alone.

• If I stop taking Tetralysal will my Acne return?

  It is possible for Tetralysal to reduce your acne to levels where it can be controlled by cleansing alone in some cases whereas for other people they may find that their acne returns after a period of time. It is generally not advised to take Tetralysal for very long periods, if your acne has cleared up you should take a break from the capsules after a few months to see if they are still required and to give yourself a break from constantly taking the medication.

• Is Tetralysal only effective for Acne on the face?

  Acne is most common on the face, although it does also occur on the neck, shoulders, back, and other places affected by excess oil from the sebaceous glands. As Tetralysal (lymecycline) is taken orally and is absorbed into your system, it is effective wherever there is an overgrowth of bacteria causing acne, whether it is your face, neck, shoulders or back.

• Can Tetralysal cause weight gain?

  There are no links between Tetralysal acne treatment and weight gain. This puts Tetralysal at an advantage compared to other acne treatments, such as the contraceptive pill, which is often associated with weight gain, among other symptoms.

• I can't swallow capsules, can I open the capsules up?

  Tetralysal capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of water. If you open the capsules, you may cause them to be ineffective due to the medicine being exposed to the contents of the stomach.

• I'm under 18, can I take Tetralysal?

  Tetralysal is licensed for use in those aged 12 years or over. The Independent Pharmacy Online Doctor service is able to prescribe Tetralysal to people aged 18 years and over for the treatment of acne. If you are aged under 18, you will need to see your GP for Tetralysal to ensure it is appropriate for you and your condition.

• It cleared up my Acne but it has now come back, can I use it again?

  If you stop taking Tetralysal and your acne comes back, you may restart treatment at any point. If your condition improves then you should continue with lymecycline treatment however, if it is less effective during subsequent rounds of treatment you may wish to try a different acne treatment.

• Is there anything else I can do whilst I am taking Tetralysal to help my Acne?

  As well as using antibiotic acne treatment such as Tetralysal (lymecycline), you should also get into the habit of cleansing the affected areas regularly. You should wash them twice daily with warm, not hot, water using a mild cleansing agent. When washing, ensure you do not scrub the area too hard so as to irritate the skin as this can make acne worse. Over washing can also aggravate acne further due to stripping the skin of its natural oils, so limiting your cleansing routine to a maximum of twice daily is recommended. If you use moisturisers or make-up on the affected area, try to ensure they are non-comedogenic (oil-free) so that they do not contribute to your acne.

  You should also use a topical, non-antibiotic ance treatment, such as Skinoren, Acnecide, or Differin, alongside Tetralysal for best results.

• What are the side effects of lymecycline?

  Like all medicines, Tetralysal capsules can cause side effects including nausea & vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache, visual disturbances and dizziness. In rare cases Tetralysal can also cause fungal infections such as thrush, skin reactions, photosensitivity, colitis and pancreatitis.

• What is the best acne treatment?

  This is a difficult one to answer, and depends on individual factors such as the severity of your acne, other skin conditions, and other medicines you take. Usually a combined treatment of an oral antibiotic and a topical cream is most effective for moderate to severe acne, whereas for mild acne a topical cream or topical antibiotic on it's own is normally enough to clear the skin.

• Do antibiotics help acne scars?

  Acne antibiotics can help to prevent further scars by clearing your acne but they will not heal existing acne scars. These usually fade over time, however if they are prominent and cause your distress you should speak to your GP about treatment options.

• Can I take Tetralysal when pregnant?

  We would not recommend taking Tetralysal during pregnancy, or whilst breastfeeding. If you have acne that requires treatment in this time, Zineryt is a topical antibiotic that is safe to use.
