Pulmicort Turbohaler (100, 200 & 400) information
What is Pulmicort and what is it used for?
Pulmicort Turbohalers are a preventative everyday treatment for the symptoms of asthma. This inhaler will help to control your asthma, as well as help prevent future attacks. Pulmicort works by reducing the inflammation within the airways, making it much easier to breathe. This is done with an active ingredient called budesonide, a corticosteroid.
Pulmicort is a popular alternative to aerosol inhalers. The medicine is present in powder form, and the device is activated by simply twisting its base and inhaling from the mouthpiece. This means that fewer steps and less coordination are required. The device also features an indicator window, which displays how many dosages are left.
Three different strengths of turbohaler are available. They come in dosages of 100, 200 and 400 micrograms. Your doctor will prescribe the strength that is appropriate for you – this will depend on a variety of factors, including the severity of your asthma, your age, and your medical history.
What is asthma?
In The United Kingdom, asthma is believed to affect over 5 million people. The condition is caused by an inflammation of the bronchi, which are the tubes that connect the lungs to the windpipe. This inflammation results in the airway passages contracting. It also increases the production of phlegm, which will further increase the obstruction in the airways. This leads to asthma symptoms, which include:
- Shortness of breath
- Tightness of the chest
- Wheezing
- Coughing
How does Pulmicort work?
Preventer inhalers, such as Pulmicort, reduce the inflammation in the bronchi that can lead to an asthma attack. Once budesonide enters the lungs, it prevents the localised cells from producing the chemicals necessary for causing inflammation. When used every day, Pulmicort will effectively manage the inflammation of the airways, reducing your risk of experiencing asthma symptoms. You should continue to use Pulmicort turbohalers even if your symptoms improve - to prevent your breathing problems from returning.
Importantly, preventer inhalers are not designed to treat asthma immediately. This product will not provide any relief during an asthma attack. For this reason, you should always carry a reliever inhaler too such as Ventolin. You will likely be prescribed Pulmicort alongside a reliever inhaler, in order to effectively control your asthmatic symptoms.
Alternatives to Pulmicort
Asthma is not a condition that can be effectively treated with over-the-counter medications. If you are looking for another treatment or want to swap inhalers you will need to broach this subject with your GP at your regular asthma review. Please do not 'Try' a new inhaler without seeing your GP first.
We recommend you have a regular check-up with your regular GP to ensure your inhalers are still keeping your asthma controlled and are still the best course for you.

Pulmicort Turbohaler (100, 200 & 400) FAQs
There are two types of inhaler: preventers and relievers. Preventer inhalers, such Pulmicort are used daily to control inflammation in the airways, which reduces the risk of an asthma attack occurring. It will not provide relief from an asthma attack.
Reliever inhalers treat asthma attacks and are used only when necessary. Reliever inhalers include Ventolin, Salamol, and Airomir.
The active ingredient starts to work immediately, and you will likely notice an improvement in your breathing problems within a three to five days of daily use.
The turbohaler is available in strengths of 100, 200 and 400 micrograms. Your doctor will prescribe the strength appropriate for you – this will depend on a number of factors including the severity of your asthma, your age, and your medical history. Generally, you will be advised to take one or two puffs twice per day.
If your asthma is very severe, your doctor will increase your recommended dose, but it will not exceed 1600mcg per day.
No – do not switch between inhalers such as Clenil, Pulmicort, and Qvar.
Because they have slightly different active ingredients, your treatment will not be effective, and your risk of side effects will increase.

The active ingredient in Pulmicort turbohalers is budesonide. The amount present in each inhalation will vary according to the strength of the inhaler.
The budesonide contained in the inhaler enters the lungs and restricts the body's production of chemicals which cause inflammation. This eases your breathing problems and reduces your risk of an asthma attack.
