Chlamydia treatment Information
What is Chlamydia treatment?
Chlamydia treatment is a powerful prescription-only antibiotic used for the treatment of the chlamydia trachomatis genital infection; a common (and often symptomless) STI.
Chlamydia treatment is considered one of the best options for chlamydia treatment because of its reduced risk of bacterial resistance. This means that it’s often chosen over alternative antibiotics, such as Azithromycin. The treatment is available in both branded (Vibramycin-D) and generic tablet forms.
Got a chlamydia infection that needs to be treated? At The Independent Pharmacy, we make ordering medication as simple as possible. Just fill out a short questionnaire, purchase your medication, and you can receive your chlamydia treatment as quickly as the next working day.
How Chlamydia treatment works
Chlamydia treatment works by blocking the production of proteins necessary for the survival and reproduction of bacteria. Taken as prescribed, it is 95% effective in treating chlamydia.
If you are prescribed Chlamydia treatment for your chlamydia infection, it’s crucial that you take every dose as prescribed and complete the whole course of treatment, even if your symptoms have already cleared up. When treating chlamydia, the standard course of Chlamydia treatment is two 100mg capsules per day, for 7 days.
Remember:
- It’s important to get tested for chlamydia at least once a year. You can buy chlamydia tests online, or from your local sexual health clinic.
- If you test positive for chlamydia and are prescribed Chlamydia treatment, it’s best to inform your most recent sexual partner and begin treatment at the same time.
- Tests can take 6 weeks or more to go negative after chlamydia has been successfully treated. It is not currently recommended to re-test after you have taken treatment.
How should I take Chlamydia treatment?
As with other antibiotics, you must finish your course of Chlamydia treatment as prescribed, even if your chlamydia symptoms subside. This helps to prevent bacterial resistance.
When taking Chlamydia treatment, follow these guidelines:
- Take ONE capsule TWICE daily for SEVEN days.
- Always ensure you complete the prescribed course.
- You should take Chlamydia treatment with or after food and with a full glass of water.
- Do not have sex for SEVEN days after treatment is complete.
- Current UK guidelines state that you do not need a chlamydia test after treatment.
Be aware that Chlamydia treatment won’t protect you from future infections, and it is recommended to avoid sexual activity during treatment to prevent reinfection or any further spread.
What happens if I miss a dose of Chlamydia treatment?
If you miss a dose of Chlamydia treatment, it’s important to take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose, it’s better to skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
Missing doses can decrease the effectiveness of the medication and may prolong your recovery time. If you miss multiple doses, it’s best to inform your GP or pharmacist as soon as possible.
Always complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you start to feel better. This helps to ensure that the infection is completely cured and reduces the risk of resistance.

Chlamydia Treatment Capsules FAQs
When taking Doxycycline, how long do I have to wait before I can again have sex?
It is imperative that you refrain from sexual activity, whether it be vaginal, oral or anal, even when wearing a condom, until you and your sexual partner(s) have been tested and have completed the treatment.
Doxycycline is a seven-day course and sex should be avoided both during this seven day period and the following seven days after the course of medication has finished, so as to avoid reoccurrence.
Will I have to return to the clinic?
If the medication is taken as directed, it may not be necessary to return, though you may need another chlamydia test if:
- The symptoms are still there
- You have been treated whilst pregnant
- You didn’t take the medication as directed
- You had sex before the two week period of abstinence had come to an end.
Will my GP know about my treatment?
We only contact your GP if you request us to do so and only with your written consent.
However, our medical staff, who work to ethical guidelines, do recommend that you inform your doctor of this health condition and its treatment.
Does doxycycline work?
This medication is very effective and, if you have taken the medication in the manner directed, you may not need a follow-up chlamydia test.
Does it take long to cure chlamydia?
When taken as directed, a full course of doxycycline or azithromycin, will clear chlamydia within seven days. Should you experience side-effects, you will need another test.
Why use Doxycycline?
An antibiotic, doxycycline is used for the treatment of STIs (sexually-transmitted infections) and also for the prevention of malaria. It works by making the parasites or bacteria, which need to produce protein to survive, become vulnerable.
The body's immune system can then fight the infection and reduce the spread of infection.
Are there any benefits to using Doxycycline?
Doxycycline needs only a low dose to treat sexually-transmitted diseases. If other antibiotics have caused side-effects, doxycycline can be prescribed as an alternative.
Why have my symptoms not cleared up?
This could be due to several reasons:
- The symptoms could be from some other cause
- It is possible to have two or more STIs at the same time
- The symptoms may relate to an infection in the urinary tract or, in women, could relate to endometriosis
- If you have unprotected sex with someone who is infected, or not yet clear of an infection, you could become re-infected.
Antibiotics work well on sexually-transmitted infections so, if your condition has not cleared, seek advice from your local GUM (genitourinary medicine) clinic or your doctor. In this case, you may need a second chlamydia test about six weeks after the initial test.
Can I take the second chlamydia test soon after the first test, so as to be sure that the medication has worked?
Taking a second test too soon after the first one may give a result of positive to the infection, or be because of re-infection, so that's why you are asked to wait six weeks.
Can I become re-infected, if my partner didnt take the treatment as well?
It is very important that you both abstain from sex (even with a condom) until the treatment has taken effect and to wait two weeks from the start of treatment, by which time the infection will have gone.
If I am taking doxycycline and I vomit, does that mean that the treatment will not be effective?
Missing out on one pill through vomiting shouldn’t affect the success of the medication, so continue to take all pills in the course prescribed.
Missing several pills could affect the success of the treatment.
What happens if I forget to take a pill?
Take the tablet as soon as you remember that you have forgotten.
However, if you don’t remember until the next day, do not take a double dose.
Having missed one pill may therefore reduce the effectiveness of the course of medication so, if you think it is possible that you might miss a day, ask for azithromycin instead.
Is drinking alcohol permitted when on this medication?
Alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment, so do not drink any alcohol whilst on the course of medication.
Will this medication affect my capacity to drive?
Doxycycline shouldn't affect driving but, if you think you are experiencing some side-effects which could affect your capacity to drive, speak with your doctor about it.
Am I allowed to take doxycycline while pregnant?
If you are pregnant, hoping to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, make sure your doctor is aware of this, so that he can prescribe accordingly.
Does doxycycline need any special storage method?
Simply store it at room temperature and keep it safe from children.
Can doxycycline be bought over the counter?
In the UK, it is a prescribed medication only. If you attend The Independent Pharmacy for doxycycline, you will need to complete a medical survey and have your case assessed, before doxycycline will be prescribed.
