What is a cold sore?

Cold sores are small blistered or crusty areas of skin that usually affect the skin around the lips and mouth. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are very contagious. Once you have caught this virus there is, unfortunately, no cure, however, there are some very effective treatments available that can reduce the severity and duration of a flare-up of cold sores. Cold sores are only contagious when you actively have symptoms.

For more information regarding cold sores please see our Advice for Cold Sores page.
