About 4mm Pen Needles
What are 4mm Pen Needles?
4mm Pen Needles have been designed so that they are a universal fit for all insulin and GLP-1 pen delivery devices including Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca, Sanofi and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro pen.
Pen needles such as these are used with the medication pens to inject the treatment into the subcutaneous tissue. They are designed to be ultra-thin and ultra-sharp to minimise pain and discomfort during injection.
How to use these needles
Before using or touching any needle, it is important to wash and dry your hands thoroughly. The needle is a sterile product and should remain that way up until use.
- Take the cap off of your pen and attach the needle carefully.
- Remove the outer and inner sheaths of the needle
- Hold the pen upright dial in 2 clicks (not a full dose) and press the release button to test the pen - the medication should appear at the point of the needle.
- This is called an ‘air shot’ it primes the pen read for use - ensure that you follow the instructions given with the pen device to perform this correctly
- Decide on the area which you intend to inject, for example thighs, upper arms, buttocks or abdomen, and then select the necessary dose.
- Inject into the selected area.
- Press the button to release the dose.
- Wait 10 seconds before removing the needle.
- Return the needle to the outer sheath to prevent injury
- Dispose of the needle and sheath in a sharps bin.
Can you reuse Pen Needles?
You must never reuse a needle. The pen needles are sterile and must only ever be used once.
Using a needle more than once can harm the needle tip and its protective coating, leading to more painful injections and a higher chance of bleeding or bruising.
Additionally, reusing needles may cause blockages, making it harder to administer your medication in subsequent injections.
Moreover, it can elevate the risk of needle breakage and harm your skin.
How to store the needles
Store Pen Needles out of sight and reach of children.
How to dispose of the needles
Make sure to use a sharps bin when disposing of used needles. Please note once the pen has been fully utilised this can be disposed of in household waste. Only the needles are required to be removed into the sharps bins
Used needles must never be broken or bent before disposal and you must never try to recap a needle.
