Before You Start Using Oestrogel

It can be tempting when you receive your Oestrogel prescription for the first time to skip the patient information leaflet inside and go straight to application. But it’s important to take a few moments to read it through as it contains essential details about how to use the gel safely and correctly.

Even if you’ve only just picked up your medication or received it through the post, check the packaging so you know you’ve got the right product and it hasn’t expired – out of date medication can be less effective or even unsafe. Always use Oestrogel as directed by your doctor and store it away from heat and direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness.

Before you apply the gel make sure your skin is clean, dry and unbroken – this helps it to absorb properly. And double-check your prescribed dose as using too much or too little can affect your treatment.

Setting Up Your Oestrogel Pump-Pack

Before you start using Oestrogel, take a moment to set up your pump pack correctly. Whether you have a conical or cylindrical bottle, your pump will need to be primed before you use it for the first time. Priming is important because it means you get the correct dose each time you use it.

To prime the pump, remove the cap from the canister and remove the stopper (the conical bottle has no stopper) from the spout. Press firmly a few times until the gel starts to come out. This may take a few pumps but once the gel appears your pump is ready to use.

Wipe away and dispose of any gel dispensed during the priming process – this isn’t part of your prescribed dose.

Each pack contains 64 metered doses. Check once more your dosage instructions and you’re good to go. If you’re unsure about anything, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Daily Application Steps

You should apply Oestrogel once a day. You can choose the morning or the evening - whatever works best for you - but you need to be consistent.

Before you apply the Oestrogel make sure you know the dosage (the number of pumps) you need to apply. Most women start on two pumps, but it can be up to four at a time, depending on your needs.

Clean and dry your hands and check they’re free from cuts or abrasions. Choose where you want to apply the gel – the outer arm and shoulder of both arms or the mid-inner thigh of both legs. Avoid applying it near the breasts or genital region. Spread the gel thinly over the sites. Changing sites regularly is recommended.

Important Oestrogel Aftercare Instructions

Once you’ve applied the Oestrogel, leave the area to dry for five minutes before covering with clothes. Remember it’s really important, other people, especially children, shouldn’t come into contact with where you’ve applied the gel, or they could inadvertently absorb Oestrogel too. If they do touch it, wash their hands or any area that’s come into contact with it immediately with soap and water.

Once you’re done, wash your hands thoroughly. Don’t wash the area where you’ve applied the gel or use other skincare products for at least an hour.
