Priligy Information
What is Priligy and what is it used for?
Priligy Tablets are available to buy from The Independent Pharmacy, following a free consultation, to help prevent premature ejaculation.
Priligy Tablets contain the active ingredient Dapoxetine. It is mainly used to treat the condition, premature ejaculation. Priligy is manufactured by A. Menarini and is classified as a prescription-only medicine (POM). Priligy comes in two strengths; 30mg and 60mg tablets. Each pack contains three tablets along with a comprehensive patient information leaflet.
Priligy Tablets are taken a couple of hours prior to sexual activity, providing an increase in the intra-vaginal ejaculatory latency in men. There is no set time for what classes as premature ejaculation. However, the general consensus regards anything that lasts under two minutes to be premature. Priligy was originally developed for the treatment of depression. It has since been re-marketed as a treatment for premature ejaculation, after proving to have a significant impact on the male ejaculation time. Clinical trials have shown that by using Priligy the duration of your sexual performance can increase by 200 to 300%. These drug trials also reported an increased ability to exert more control over ejaculation, as well as a greater sense of overall satisfaction.
To be able to ejaculate, a reflex must be transmitted from your brain to the sympathetic nervous system. To achieve this the body uses serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter responsible for passing messages between the nerve cells. Serotonin has numerous functions in the body, one of which is sending the necessary nerve messages that will result in ejaculation.
Priligy Tablets can be prescribed online after an online assessment by a doctor to ensure they are appropriate to use. Priligy is usually prescribed for men between the ages of 18 and 64.
How does Priligy work?
The active ingredient in Priligy, Dapoxetine, belongs to a group of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These work by increasing the activity of serotonin in the body’s nervous system, selectively inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin by the neural cells. This action stops the ejaculation expulsion reflex from reaching the brain too quickly, increasing the time it takes to ejaculate and improving control over the ejaculation.
Non-medicinal alternatives for premature ejaculation
- Behavioural techniques - This is usually taught by sexual therapists.
- Psychological techniques - Counselling can often help men to gain control.
- Reduce penis sensitivity - Use a thicker or numbing condom, such as Durex Extended Pleasure or Pasante Delay condoms.

Priligy warnings
Priligy interacts with a small number of other medicines. These will be checked during your online consultation with our GP. If you are unsure or wish to check your medicines for interactions with Priligy, check the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicine.
Priligy may be taken with medicines for erectile dysfunction such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, however, it is important to stay well hydrated if you use this combination. This will help to reduce the slightly increased risk of dizziness or fainting.
Priligy does not always work for everyone the first time they use it. If this is the case you should not give up, the guidance states that you should try Priligy at least 6 times before trying an alternative dose or treatment.
Stop taking Priligy and see your doctor straight away if:
- You have fits (seizures)
- You faint or feel lightheaded when you stand up
- You notice any changes in your mood
- You have any thoughts of suicide or harming yourself.
If you notice any of the above, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor straight away.
Fainting and low blood pressure
This medicine can make you faint or make your blood pressure drop when you stand up. To help lower the chance of this happening:
- Take this medicine with at least one full glass of water.
- Do not take this medicine if you are dehydrated (you do not have enough water in your body). This can happen if:
- You have not had anything to drink in the past 4 to 6 hours
- You have been sweating for a long time
- You have an illness where you have a high temperature, diarrhoea or being sick.
- If you feel like you might faint (such as feeling sick, feeling dizzy, light-headed, confused, sweaty or an abnormal heartbeat), or feel light-headed when you stand up, immediately lie down so your head is lower than the rest of your body or sit down with your head between your knees until you feel better. This will stop you from falling and hurting yourself if you do faint.
- Do not stand up quickly after you have been sitting or lying down for a long time.
- Do not drive or use any tools or machines if you feel faint when taking this medicine.
- Tell your doctor if you faint when taking this medicine.

Priligy Tablets (30mg & 60mg) FAQs
Priligy is the only licensed tablet in the UK to treat premature ejaculation. This is where men ejaculate before penetration or in less than two minutes after starting sex.
It contains the active ingredient dapoxetine and is available in 30mg and 60mg strengths. Men from the ages of 18 to 64 years old can use it.
Dapoxetine is the active ingredient in Priligy and it belongs to the family of medicines called SSRI’s (This stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). It increases the serotonin in the nervous system and this in turn improves the time it takes to ejaculate. It is not known exactly how the increased serotonin delays ejaculation.
If you have not had this medication before, you should start with the 30mg Priligy tablet.
Swallow one tablet whole with a full glass of water, 1 to 3 hours before sexual activity. (Drinking water after taking the tablet will reduce the likeliness of fainting or a fall in blood pressure.) Crushing or breaking the tablet will leave a bitter taste in the mouth.
If the 30mg tablet is well tolerated but its effects are insufficient, you can increase the strength to the 60mg tablet. The results are better with the 60mg tablet however there is a higher chance of side effects at this dose.
Do not take more than 1 Priligy tablet of any strength in a 24-hour period.
Priligy should only be taken before sexual activity. It should not be taken on a continual daily basis without sexual activity. No more than one Priligy tablet of either strength should be taken in 24 hours.
If you suffer from an inability to maintain sexual intercourse for longer than two minutes or have a lack of control over when you ejaculate, then you may be suffering from premature ejaculation. This can have a negative impact on you and interpersonal relationships.
Priligy is the only UK licenced tablet to treat premature ejaculation. It is successful in 80% of men and can increase the time it takes to ejaculate from one minute to three to four minutes in some men. The Priligy 60mg tablet is more likely to prolong time to ejaculation significantly however there is also a greater chance of side effects.
The maximum effect of Priligy will be seen one to two hours after taking the tablet. After 24 hours, 95% of the medication will have been eliminated from the body.
Priligy can interact with a number of medicines. If you are using the below medication it is not recommended that you take Priligy.
If you do decide to take Priligy then the below medication needs to be stopped for 14 days before Priligy can be taken and should only be started 7 days after taking Priligy:
- Older style antidepressants called Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
- Thioridazine used for schizophrenia
- Medicines for depression
- Lithium − for bipolar disorder
- Linezolid − an antibiotic used to treat infections
- Tryptophan − to help you sleep
- St John’s Wort − a herbal medicine
- Tramadol − used to treat serious pain
- Any medicines used to treat migraines.
- Ketoconazole and itraconazole - antifungals
- Ritonavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir and atazanavir – used to treat HIV
- Telithromycin - an antibiotic
- Nefazodone − an antidepressant.
You should always discuss changing or stopping medication with your doctor. You should not make changes to, or stop, any regular medication yourself.
Priligy is not recommended for men with the following:
- Liver or severe kidney problems
- Low blood pressure and/or have a history of fainting
- Severe depression
- Heart problems
- A history of mania
Priligy should not be taken if you are taking any of the medicines detailed above.
Priligy is absorbed and starts to work quickly reaching a maximum concentration in the body after one to two hours of being taken.
It is eliminated very quickly and after 24 hours, 95% of the drug will have been removed from the body.
Around 80% of men taking Priligy see an improvement in the time it takes them to reach ejaculation. The results are slightly higher with the 60mg strength but there is also a higher chance of side effects with this dose.
Priligy is a prescription-strength medicine meaning it can only be obtained or purchased from a pharmacy or doctor that has the appropriate registration in the UK. Priligy can be prescribed for you by your own GP or it can be purchased from a regulated online pharmacy like The Independent Pharmacy. You should never buy medicines from abroad, unregulated sources or sites like Ebay.
If Priligy is taken after drinking alcohol, it can increase feelings of dizziness, drowsiness and slow reactions.
Priligy can temporally lower your blood pressure or cause you to faint. For these reasons it is not recommended to take Priligy and drink alcohol together.
Menarini is the only manufacturer who has the license to produce Priligy tablets (dapoxetine 30mg & 60mg).
Until the exclusive license expires it is only available as branded Priligy and there is no unbranded or generic version available.
Priligy can be taken with erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. However you should be in a position where you can lie or sit down if you feel faint or light headed the first few times you take them together (fainting or light-headedness tends to occur more frequently when standing up).
Both medicines have the ability to lower your blood pressure and if you get a light-headed feeling it is best to leave 24 hours between taking Priligy with Viagra, SIldenafil or Levitra. You should leave 48 hours between taking Priligy and Cialis.
All our Priligy and other medication is sourced from the main pharmaceutical wholesaler responsible for supplying half the pharmacies in the UK.
We only supply genuine UK-branded medication. You can check that it is genuine using the manufacturers online facility or by calling them to confirm the batch number, expiry date and country of purchase.
