Nystaform HC Information

What is Nystaform HC?

Nystaform HC is a light-yellow topical treatment for use on the skin. Nystaform HC is a combination treatment containing an anti-fungal, an antibacterial and 0.5% hydrocortisone. It has been used by healthcare professionals and patients for 40 years.

Nystaform HC is used to help treat skin infections caused by fungi and/or bacteria such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch.

What does Nystaform HC do?

Nystaform HC is a medication used to treat fungal skin infections, such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis). It contains two active ingredients:

  1. Nystatin: This is an antifungal medication that works by disrupting the cell membrane of fungi, leading to their death. It is effective against a wide range of fungal organisms, including Candida species which commonly cause skin infections.
  2. Hydrocortisone: This is a mild corticosteroid that helps to reduce inflammation, itching, and redness associated with fungal infections. It works by suppressing the body's immune response, thereby alleviating symptoms.
  3. Chlorhexidine: Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride helps to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms on the skin, preventing or treating infections.

Nystaform HC is typically applied topically to the affected area of the skin. It helps to relieve symptoms such as itching, burning, and irritation while also treating the underlying fungal infection. It's important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or pharmacist for the correct usage and duration of treatment.

Nystaform HC alternatives

There are a range of alternative options that you may wish to look into

  1. Clotrimazole cream: This is an antifungal cream available over-the-counter. It treats fungal infections such as athlete's foot, ringworm, and jock itch. It can also be used for vaginal yeast infections.
  2. Miconazole cream: Another over-the-counter antifungal cream used to treat similar conditions as clotrimazole. It's available in various formulations including cream, powder, and spray.
  3. Ketoconazole cream: This is a prescription-strength antifungal cream used to treat a variety of fungal infections, including athlete's foot, ringworm, and seborrheic dermatitis.
  4. Terbinafine cream: Available both over-the-counter and by prescription, terbinafine cream is used to treat athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It works by killing the fungi causing the infection.
  5. Hydrocortisone cream: This is an over-the-counter topical steroid cream that can help relieve itching, inflammation, and redness associated with certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and allergic reactions.
  6. Tolnaftate cream: Available over-the-counter, tolnaftate cream is used to treat athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It works by preventing the growth of fungus on the skin.

Before using any alternative, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications. They can recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your specific needs and the type of infection or skin condition you have.

How to use Nystaform HC

Nystaform cream is typically used to treat fungal infections, nappy rash, and other skin conditions. Here's how you can use it:

  1. Clean the affected area: Before applying the cream, gently clean and dry the affected skin. This helps to remove any dirt or moisture that could worsen the infection.
  2. Apply a thin layer: Take a small amount of Nystaform cream and apply it thinly to the affected area. You can use your fingers or a cotton swab for application. Make sure to cover the entire affected area and a small amount of surrounding skin.
  3. Rub it in gently: Use gentle, circular motions to rub the cream into the skin until it's absorbed. Avoid rubbing too hard, especially if the affected area is irritated or sensitive.
  4. Frequency of application: Follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions regarding how often to apply the cream. Typically, it's applied 2 to 3 times daily, but this may vary depending on the severity of the condition.
  5. Continue use: It's important to continue using the cream for the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before the infection is completely cleared. This helps prevent the infection from coming back.
  6. Wash hands after application: After applying the cream, wash your hands thoroughly to prevent spreading the infection to other parts of your body or to others.
  7. Consult a healthcare professional: If you have any questions or concerns about using Nystaform cream, or if your symptoms worsen or don't improve after using it, consult your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance.

Remember to always read the patient information leaflet that comes with the cream or ointment for specific instructions and precautions.
