If you’re just beginning Mounjaro treatment, you may be excited about losing weight and getting healthy. You may also be a little nervous about injections and possible side effects.

During the first month Mounjaro may start to have an impact on your appetite. You will likely feel less hungry and find you’re fuller for longer. This should reduce the amount of food you eat and cause you to start losing weight. You may also experience some side effects like nausea, diarrhoea and indigestion.

To help you feel more confident about taking your weight loss medication, we’re looking at what to expect on Mounjaro and what your first month timeline might look like.

Starting Your First Week On Mounjaro

It’s common to feel a little nervous prior to starting Mounjaro. Before you take your first dose, it’s important to read the instructions carefully so you know exactly how the injection works. If you want more information, take a look at our Mounjaro injection guide.

It takes eight to 72 hours for the medication to reach peak levels in your system, but you may notice a decrease in your appetite even sooner. You could also begin to experience Mounjaro side effects like headaches, nausea, diarrhoea and indigestion.

Though unpleasant, these are normally nothing to worry about and should ease as your body gets used to the medication. If you experience more severe side effects, or are concerned about any of your symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice.

Changes During Week Two

After you take your second dose, you could begin to find fatty and sugary foods less tempting and that you feel fuller for longer. You may notice some of the same side effects that you experienced in week one, though they may be milder as your body has started to get used to the medication.

As you’re probably eating and drinking less, you could find you become dehydrated or get tired more easily. You can help reduce these effects by eating a healthy, balanced diet and drinking plenty of water.

Adjusting In Week Three

By week three, your body may be starting to adjust to Mounjaro. At this point most people notice their side effects becoming milder or disappearing completely, although some may find that their symptoms are more stubborn.

Though you may not notice any weight loss just yet, you could find that your appetite is consistently reduced and you’re eating less than normal. Remember, you’re still on the lowest dose of Mounjaro, so results will be gradual and it’s important to be patient.

Completing Your First Month

On average, people taking Mounjaro lose less than 4% of their starting body weight by the end of the first month.

However, while weight loss is of course a major consideration, it’s even more important that you’ve established healthy eating patterns and increased your levels of exercise. Making these lifestyle changes now will help you lose weight and keep it off long term.

If your body has adjusted well to Mounjaro, and you haven’t experienced any significant side effects, your doctor may now increase your dose of the medication.

When Should You Contact Your Doctor?

Most Mounjaro side effects are mild. However, there are some symptoms that require medical attention and it’s important you don’t ignore any that could be serious.

If you have:

  • a rash, itching or hives
  • swelling in your lips, tongue or throat
  • shortness of breath, trouble breathing or wheezing (a whistling sound during breathing)
  • dizziness or fainting

it’s important to speak to a doctor straight away.

It is essential that you speak to a licensed medical professional before starting any weight loss medication. They can provide personalised, expert guidance, assess potential risks and ensure that your chosen treatment is safe and suitable for your health needs.

It’s important to note that while you could lose up to 4% of your starting body weight by the end of your first month, everyone reacts to Mounjaro differently, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t see a significant difference on the scales right away.
